TANGRAMM, the All-Weather Champion for 2015/16 won his first race on the turf yesterday at Nottingham under Ryan Tate.
The 7yo son of Sakhee’s Secret was having only his fourth run on the grass following a good 50/1 second on the turf last time out at Sandown on Good to Firm, when beaten just half a length. This time it was Soft going and the the only time he had encountered similar conditions was at Windsor back in October 2017 when he was last of 14 runners, beaten 33 lengths! So, soft ground this time around was always going to be a concern.
Only five went to post after there were two declared non-runners and perhaps surprisingly, Tangramm went off a very easy to back 5/1 shot, fourth in the betting. During the race, he chased the leader, Deinonychus throughout the contest and took it up a furlong from home. Despite hanging left, he was half a length to the good in front of Overtrumped at the line.
Congratulations to owner, Roger Beadle, who took over the horse earlier this year and for whom this was his first win this year. Roger is a keen supporter of the yard and has several horses in training, including his “Queen of Chelmsford”, Lucymai.
As for Tangramm, this was his tenth career win in 40 starts. Nine of his previous wins have been on the all-weather and this star of the artificial surface, won seven out of eight during 2015/16, including five at Wolverhampton. He started winning for Harper Lodge Farm off a mark of 55 and reached a peak of 83 after his seventh success. He won yesterday off a mark of 68, so hopefully, now he’s got his head in front on turf, there could be more to come on grass.
This was the stable’s fourth win in the last seven runs and the 22nd for the year.
